Formerly GeoBlue

Travel medical insurance, wherever you go.

Most U.S. health plans, and Medicare, stop at the border. For international travel we place one carrier on purpose: Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions, sold for years as GeoBlue. In our view it is the gold standard for care abroad, so there is nothing to shop. Pick the plan that matches your trip, enroll online in a few minutes, and call us if you want a hand.

The lineup

One carrier. A plan for every kind of trip.

BCBS Global Solutions builds a different plan around each way people go abroad. Here’s how they break down.

Single Trip

The most comprehensive option, for one journey of up to 182 days. Pre-existing condition coverage is available. Traveling with five or more people? The group version of the same plan carries a discount.

Multi-Trip Annual

For frequent flyers and business travelers: unlimited international trips of up to 70 days each across the policy year, with pre-existing condition coverage included.

Worldwide Premier

Full medical coverage for moving or relocating abroad, built for people living outside their home country at least three months a year. Includes a large provider network and pre-existing condition coverage. An Outside the U.S. version is available without U.S. coverage.

Worldwide Education

Long-term coverage for students, teachers, and faculty abroad, including students on Optional Practical Training status.

Worldwide Non-Profit & Crew

Worldwide coverage priced for NGOs, missionaries, and humanitarian workers, plus a separate plan built for maritime crew members.

Emergency medical evacuation

If the care you need isn’t available where you are, evacuation gets you to a facility that can treat you. It’s one of the most expensive risks of traveling uninsured. Limits and terms vary by plan, so check the one you pick.

Before you board

Why we place one carrier here instead of forty.

Here’s the part that surprises most people: your U.S. health plan and Medicare generally don’t cover you outside the country. A hospital stay abroad usually means paying out of pocket, and an emergency medical evacuation can run into six figures. Travel medical insurance fills that gap with coverage for emergency care, hospital and doctor visits, evacuation, and 24/7 telemedicine while you’re away.

On almost every other line we shop the whole market for you. Travel medical is the one place we don’t, because we don’t think the comparison is close. Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions has been doing international medical longer than most, under a name a lot of travelers already know: GeoBlue. That’s the plan we point our own clients to, so rather than pretend to shop it, we hand you the same plan we’d pick and stay available if you need help. Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions is the trade name of Worldwide Insurance Services, LLC, an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

The other thing that matters is timing. Coverage has to be in place before your trip begins, so put it on the checklist next to the passport. You can quote and enroll yourself in a few minutes, or call us and we’ll walk you through which plan fits.

  • One carrier we trust, so there’s nothing to shop
  • Plans for one trip, a year of trips, or a full move overseas
  • Enroll yourself online, or call and we’ll walk you through it
  • A local Sumter agent to call if something goes wrong far from home

FAQ

Travel medical questions, answered

Doesn’t my regular health insurance cover me overseas?

Usually not, or only in very limited emergencies. Most U.S. health plans are built around U.S. provider networks and stop at the border, and Medicare generally doesn’t pay for care outside the country. Travel medical insurance exists precisely to fill that gap.

What does travel medical insurance actually cover?

The core benefits are emergency medical care abroad, hospital and doctor visits, emergency medical evacuation, and 24/7 telemedicine support. Depending on the plan, you can add coverage for prescriptions, dental, vision, and more. Evacuation alone can be worth the premium, since transport to an adequate facility can cost more than the rest of the trip combined.

When should I buy a travel medical plan?

Before you leave, ideally as soon as your trip is booked. Coverage needs to be in place before your journey begins, and buying early means one less thing on your pre-trip list. Quotes are quick, so a call or text to 803-848-0089 usually gets it handled the same day.

I travel internationally several times a year. Do I need a new plan every trip?

No. The Multi-Trip Annual plan covers unlimited international trips of up to 70 days each within the policy year, and pre-existing condition coverage is included. For frequent travelers, one annual plan is usually simpler and often cheaper than buying trip by trip. If a single journey will run longer than 70 days, the Single Trip plan covers up to 182 days instead.

Do these plans work for students studying abroad?

Yes. Worldwide Education is built for students, teachers, and faculty spending an extended stretch abroad, including students on Optional Practical Training status. If your school or visa has a specific insurance requirement, send us the requirement and we’ll confirm the plan meets it before you buy.

Is this the same thing as GeoBlue?

Yes. GeoBlue was renamed Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions. The plans, the provider network, and the company behind them didn’t change, only the name on the front. If a school, employer, or travel agent told you to look for GeoBlue, this is what they meant.

Why don’t you shop this across multiple carriers like everything else?

Because we don’t think it’s a close call. International medical is a specialized market, and BCBS Global Solutions is the plan we’d put our own family on, so we place it directly instead of running a comparison we already know the answer to. If you’d rather look at alternatives, tell us and we’ll talk it through honestly.

Who can buy a plan?

You need to be 18 or older to purchase. An adult can buy on behalf of someone younger, though no one under age 6 can be enrolled by themselves. Everyone traveling should be listed when you quote, since what you pay is based on each traveler’s age at the time of purchase.
