✦ For bars, taverns & nightclubs

Bar insurance in South Carolina.

Fights, door staff, late nights, live bands, and a cooler full of product. A bar carries risks a restaurant never sees, and plenty of carriers will not touch them. We shop the ones that still write SC bars and build the whole package, not just the liquor policy. Licensed in Georgia and North Carolina too. Zero agency fees, ever.

✦ The full bar package

Everything a bar needs, from the front door to the last call.

Neighborhood taverns, sports bars, music venues, and nightclubs. The liquor policy is one piece. These are the rest.

General liability with assault & battery

Slips on a wet floor, a trip over a bar stool, and the one that matters most in a bar: a fight. We read how your quote treats assault and battery before you buy it. Here is what to look for.

Liquor liability

The policy South Carolina requires for on-premises service after 5pm. We quote it with the rest of your package, and our SC liquor liability page covers the law and the Act 42 credits.

Property, signage & business income

Your build-out, bar top, furniture, POS, stock, and the lit sign out front. Business income pays your bills and payroll if a covered fire or storm shuts you down through your busiest weekends.

Equipment breakdown

Walk-in coolers, draft systems, glycol chillers, ice machines. When a compressor quits on a Friday, this pays for the repair and the kegs and product you lose.

Workers' comp & employment practices

Bartenders, barbacks, and door staff all get hurt on the job, and in SC comp generally kicks in at four employees. Employment practices covers claims from staff, including harassment by a customer.

Hired & non-owned auto, plus umbrella

A barback making the bank deposit or a bartender grabbing ice in their own car puts your bar on the hook for that wreck. An umbrella stacks extra limits over the whole package.

✦ The line that decides a bar claim

Assault and battery: four ways it shows up on a bar quote

Two quotes with the same limit can pay completely differently after a fight. The difference is usually one endorsement, and it is often on both the general liability and the liquor policy. Here is how to read it.

What the quote saysWhat happens after a fightWhat to ask
Assault and battery excludedThe claim is not covered, including the cost of a lawyer to defend it. You pay all of it.Is there any version of this policy that includes it? If not, keep shopping.
Assault and battery sublimitCovered, but only up to a smaller amount than your main limit. A serious injury can blow through it fast. What is the sublimit, and does it shrink as defense costs are paid?
Covered at full limitsA fight is treated like any other covered injury, up to your full limit.Does that apply on both the GL and the liquor policy, or just one?
Exclusion reaches your staffSome wording also removes claims that your bouncer used too much force, or that you failed to stop a fight or hire and train security properly.Does the exclusion or sublimit include negligent hiring, supervision, or failure to prevent?

Wording varies by carrier and changes at renewal, so treat this as a guide to the questions, not a description of your policy. Send us your current declarations and endorsements and we will point to the row your policy sits in today.

✦ South Carolina bars, honestly

Why South Carolina bars are hard to insure, and how we place them.

South Carolina sets a $1 million liquor liability floor for most bars, and the 2025 reform law lets you earn credits against that number. Our liquor liability guide explains both. This page is about everything else a bar has to insure, because the liquor policy does not pay for a fight on your floor, a dead compressor, or an injured bartender.

Carriers price a bar on a short list: how much of your money comes from alcohol, what time you close, whether you have a dance floor, a DJ, or bands, how many people fit inside, and whether you run security. Close at 2am with a cover charge and you are in a different market than a tavern that locks up at 11. Tell us the real numbers, including the maximum occupancy on the card your fire marshal posted. A quote built on a guess can come apart at claim time, and that is worse than a higher price now. Our liquor liability cost guide shows how far those factors move the number.

When the reform law changed the market, some agencies simply ran out of places to send bars. A bar owner in Lexington called us after their previous agency said it had nowhere left to place them. We found a carrier that would write it, the bill came in lower than what they had been paying, and the bar stayed open. That is the job: knowing which carriers still want SC bars this year.

Own a place in Georgia or North Carolina too? Griffin is licensed in both states and serves them by phone, text, and email from Sumter. The rules change across the line. Georgia leaves liquor liability out of its state licensing, which we cover on our Georgia liquor liability page, and both states generally require workers' comp at three employees instead of four.

The question to ask first

Does this cover a fight?

A&B

Most bar claims start with an altercation. A cheap quote that excludes assault and battery is not cheap. We tell you exactly what yours says.

✦ Bouncers, door staff & off-duty officers

Who works your door changes your insurance

Security staff make a bar safer and make a claim more complicated. Whether they are on your payroll or someone else's decides which policy answers when a patron says they were hurt at the door.

Your own door staff. If they are your employees, their injuries go to your workers' comp, and claims that they hurt a patron land on your general liability. That is where assault and battery wording matters most, because a removal gone wrong is the textbook bar lawsuit. Train them, write down your removal policy, and log every incident the night it happens.

A contracted security company. Hiring out moves some of the risk, but only if the paperwork does it. Get their certificate of insurance, ask them to add your bar as an additional insured on their general liability, make sure they carry workers' comp for their guards, and sign a contract that has them take responsibility for their own people. In South Carolina, a company selling guard service for a fee must hold a contract security license from SLED, so ask for that too.

The SLED question for in-house staff. South Carolina also licenses proprietary security, meaning a business that assigns its own employees to security on its own property. The law exempts staff who are unarmed, not in uniform, and have no arrest authority, working for a business that is not itself a security company. A plain-clothes door checker usually fits that exemption. Uniformed or armed in-house security generally does not. If yours are close to the line, confirm with SLED before you put them in shirts that say SECURITY.

Off-duty officers. Plenty of SC bars hire full-time police officers to work the door. State law exempts them from the security license when they work as independent contractors. Your insurance still needs to know they are there, and some carriers ask how they are paid and who they answer to.

  • In-house door staff covered by your comp and your GL
  • Contracted security names you as additional insured
  • SLED licensing checked for contract and uniformed staff
  • Incident logs kept every night, not after a claim
Before you hire

Ask the security company for three things

A current SLED contract security license, a certificate of insurance naming your bar as additional insured, and proof of workers' comp for their guards. If they cannot produce all three, their risk becomes your risk.

✦ What a bad night looks like

Four bar claims, and the policy that answers each one

None of these are liquor liability claims, and every one of them happens in South Carolina bars. Each lands on a different part of the package.

Live music

A speaker stack tips off the stage into the crowd

A patron is injured. That is general liability, and the quote needs to know you host bands. Some policies exclude or limit claims tied to stages, mosh pits, or performers, so we say yes to entertainment on the application instead of hoping it never comes up.

Draft system

The glycol chiller quits during a home football weekend

Equipment breakdown pays to fix it and covers the kegs and product you lose. Business income can help with the sales you missed if the breakdown is covered. Without it, the repair and the stock come out of your pocket.

Staff errand

A barback rear-ends someone on the way to the bank

The car is theirs, but the trip was for your bar, so the lawsuit names you. Hired and non-owned auto is what protects the business. Their personal policy protects them, not you.

Storm night

Wind takes the lit sign off the front of the building

Many property forms cover outdoor signs for only a small amount unless they are listed on the policy. A custom sign can cost thousands to replace, so we list it with its real value.

✦ FAQ

Bar insurance questions, answered

What insurance does a bar need in South Carolina?

Most SC bars need general liability that addresses assault and battery, the liquor liability policy the state requires for on-premises service, property coverage for the build-out, stock, and signs, equipment breakdown for coolers and draft systems, and workers' comp when your payroll reaches four people. Employment practices, hired and non-owned auto, and an umbrella round it out.

Does bar insurance cover fights?

Only if the policy says so. Many bar policies exclude assault and battery or cap it at a sublimit lower than the main limit, and some exclusions also reach claims about your security staff. We read that wording on every quote and tell you exactly what it covers before you buy.

Do my bouncers need a license in South Carolina?

It depends on how you use them. A company that sells guard service for a fee needs a contract security license from SLED. A business that assigns its own employees to security can need a proprietary security license, but staff who are unarmed, not in uniform, and have no arrest authority are exempt. Check with SLED if you are unsure.

Is nightclub insurance different from bar insurance?

The coverages are the same, but nightclubs sit in a tougher market. Late closing, a dance floor, a DJ or cover charge, and big crowds mean fewer carriers will quote, and many of those that do are specialty markets. Accurate occupancy, hours, and security details are what get a nightclub a real offer.

My agency says no one will write my bar. Can you help?

Often, yes. Since the SC reform law reshaped the market, some agencies have lost their bar markets entirely. We shop more than 40 carriers, including ones that still write late-night SC bars, and we have placed bars after another agency ran out of options.

Do you cover bars outside South Carolina?

Yes. We hold licenses in Georgia and North Carolina and serve both by phone, text, and email from our Sumter office. Rules differ: Georgia's state alcohol license does not hinge on liquor liability, and both states generally require workers' comp at three employees rather than South Carolina's four.
